Removing and Replacing the Bar
The bar is manufactured in two parts as in the picture above:
- a roll pin which is a snug fit inside the lug on each side and passed through a cylindrical bar
- a hollow cylindrical bar which sits between the lugs
To remove:
- Secure the shackle in position
- Drive the roll pin out far enough to grip the other end and remove by pulling.
The optimum tools for driving out the roll pin so that the bar is free to be removed are a roll pin punch or a simple drive punch with a flat head, pictured below
Care should be taken to use the correct size punch.
Place the punch head carefully on the roll pin and execute a few sharp taps with a light hammer - Pull the roll pin out from the exposed end taking care not to deform the pin
- This will allow the bar to be removed
To replace:
- Secure the shackle in position
- Line the cylindrical bar up with the wholes through the lugs of the shackle
- Line up the roll pin and tap gently until the flush.
- Use a punch to execute the final securing tap.
