Anchor Warps Spliced to Chain

The Jimmy Green Rigging Team join Anchoring Warp and Chain Anchor Rodes with a professional splice to combine their best properties into a combination rode.

The stretchy nature of the rope extension complements the weight and abrasion resistance of the chain. The two components of the anchor rode can be spliced together by the Jimmy Green Rigging Team so that the join will pass over the bow roller, around the windlass gypsy and down the hawse pipe. Some windlass models have a gypsy that will successfully grip and operate with rope and chain.

N.B. It is advisable to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation concerning the diameter and construction of the rope for the combination rope/chain windlass gypsy.

The manufacturer will make it clear in the owner's manual whether the gypsy is suitable for three strand twisted lay construction rope, Anchorplait (also known as Octoplait/Squareline) eight strand construction rope, or both. Three-strand-only gypsys have been proven to work satisfactorily with Anchorplait over many years, but you go against the manufacturer's recommendation at your own risk. There will also be a manufacturer recommendation on rope diameter, which is always necessary to follow.

Nylon is generally regarded as the optimum rope for anchoring because it is comparable in strength with the appropriate Grade 40 anchor chain size and has the most stretch and shock-absorbing qualities. However, polyester is a very suitable alternative.

Nylon and Polyester are available in a three strand twisted lay construction or balanced eight strand plaited construction known as Octoplait or the Jimmy Green exclusive Anchorplait.

Both constructions can be successfully spliced into chain.

N.B. The quality of the splicing is essential to the integrity of the rode. A substandard splice could compromise the working load capacity of the entire anchoring system.

Windlasses are also available with a warping drum for hauling rope if necessary.

If you already have a windlass, it is crucial to establish the size and calibration of the chain and rope that will fit the gypsy before you order.

LIROS specify their minimum break loads in Dekanewtons (DaN)

Kg force is a more recognisable illustration of strength, so you can convert the LIROS DaN values as follows:

1 Dekanewton = approximately 1.02 kg force

Therefore, the strength for any given diameter will be higher in kg than in daN, e.g. 11800daN = approximately 12036kg

Plain white LIROS Octoplait Nylon article 01058 with only LIROS tracer yarns is also available.
