Anchorplait Nylon Chain Snubbing Strops

Jimmy Green Anchorplait® Nylon Anchor Chain Snubbing Strops alleviate the detrimental snatches and jerks associated with all-chain anchor rode systems - a single stretchy nylon line which takes the strain off the windlass and absorbs the shock loading.

The snubbing line can be led offset through a port or starboard fairlead, but for longer-term anchoring, the line should be routed over the bow roller, through the stemhead fitting and made fast to the most suitably positioned deck strongpoint.

A careful, precautionary assessment of any potential chafe issues is recommended, with preventive action taken where necessary:

Jimmy Green Chain Snubbing Strops are available in Anchorplait, Eight-Strand and traditional Three-Strand construction.

Jimmy Green Anchorplait Nylon Single Line Chain Snubbing Strops are available to custom build online using:

LIROS Anchorplait® 100% White Nylon (Polyamide) Article 01058JG - manufactured exclusively by LIROS Ropes for Jimmy Green Marine with the Jimmy Green designed Easy Splice Markers - available from 10mm up to and including 20mm diameter.

LIROS Anchorplait White Nylon (Polyamide) is the optimum rope for anchoring and anchor chain snubbing.

LIROS Octoplait Nylon article 01058 has an identical construction in 100% nylon (polyamide) but without the Jimmy Green exclusive, trademark easy splice markers - available from 10mm up to 24mm in diameter.

Anchorplait® is a UK-registered Trademark

LIROS Anchorplait® White Nylon Article 01058JG is manufactured EXCLUSIVELY by LIROS Ropes with Easy Splice Markers for Jimmy Green Marine.

The eight-strand construction, two pairs left hand, two pairs right hand, delivers a balanced performance and no undesirable twist under tension.

Anchorplait is the rope that won't cockle.

In fact, it falls and flakes like a chain.

Anchorplait makes an ideal snubbing line because it will stay supple for the duration of its working life.

LIROS Anchorplait and Octoplait Nylon Break Load in daN:
10mm 12mm 14mm 16mm 18mm 20mm 24mm
2400daN 3300daN 4400daN 5600daN 7000daN 8140 daN 11800daN

LIROS specify their minimum break loads in Dekanewtons (DaN)

Kg force is a more recognisable illustration of strength, so you can convert the LIROS DaN values as follows:

1 Dekanewton = approximately 1.02 kg force

Therefore, the strength for any given diameter will be higher in kg than in daN, e.g. 11800daN = approximately 12036kg.

Plain white LIROS Octoplait Nylon article 01058 with only LIROS tracer yarns is also available.

Jimmy Green Anchorplait Nylon Single Line Snubbing Strops Facts and Features

  • An anchor snubbing line should be approximately 3 metres to 10 metres in length - the longer it is, the more it will stretch
  • Anchorplait is far easier to manage in longer lengths than traditional twisted lay ropes, making Anchorplait Snubbing Lines much kinder to hands and simpler to stow
  • The rope can be attached to the chain with a rolling hitch or a spliced Chain Hook/Grab/Gripper, which can be retentive - the other end should be made off to a suitable strongpoint on the foredeck
  • It is possible to extend the length of the snubbing line by careful routing (avoiding chafe points) to a strongpoint further aft
  • N.B. Chain hooks are not designed to fit through the link of a calibrated chain. Locate the chain hook, gripper, or grab over one link so that the load is bearing on the outside of the next link (which will be at right angles).
  • The strength (diameter) of the strop should be comparable with your main anchor rode
  • Splicing retains far more of the rope strength than tying a knot - knots can reduce the break load by as much as 50%, while a professional splice will generally retain approximately 80-85% of the original load capacity (this percentage may vary with the rope and splice construction)
  • Adding a mooring compensator will increase the elasticity of the snubbing line - this extra shock absorbing capacity could be utilised to reduce the length of the line.
  • Adding anti-chafe webbing will protect the line where it leads over the bow roller, through the stem fitting and wherever it may come into any abrasive contact from there to the strongpoint.

Jimmy Green Advisory
Attaching the hook or grab with a shackle may seem a little clunky, but it does mean that the hook can be removed for a mooring application and replaced if required.
