Stainless Steel Shackles

Stainless Steel Shackles are available in a standard Dee, U-shape format or a more open, rounded, pear-shape referred to as a Bow Shackle.

Dee shackles tend to be narrower than Bow which may be beneficial where space is restricted.

The more open rounded configuration of a Bow Shackle is better suited to taking angled or lateral loads. Bow shackles are therefore generally used for Anchoring and Mooring applications.

Stainless Steel generally refers to a wide range of iron alloys with a minimum of 10.5% chromium and additional alloying elements which improve corrosion or oxidation resistance, formability, strength and cryogenic toughness e.g. Nickel, Molybdenum, Titanium, Copper, Carbon, Nitrogen Marine Grade Stainless Steel should be corrosion resistant in a sea water environment and has a much higher chromium content at 16-18%

Grade 316 stainless steel is generally regarded as the minimum standard for marine use, but is not wholly resistant to staining in warm sea water.

The molybdenum content in Grade 316 delivers better overall corrosion resistant properties than Grade 304.

316 Grade may exhibit surface corrosion in a marine environment, normally apparent as brown staining and mainly evident in crevices or on a rough surface finish.

Grade 316L Stainless Steel is the low carbon, higher grade version of 316, and is immune from sensitisation (grain boundary carbide precipitation)

17/4PH Stainless Steel is a high tensile version first developed in the Marine Industry for high load halyard snapshackles by Navtec Norseman Gibb.

Shackles that are electrically upset forged from 17/4PH precipitation hardened martensitic stainless steel have significantly higher break loads but lower resistance to corrosion than 316L.

Grade 316L has superior corrosion resistance due to a 2-3% Molybdenum additive.

Petersen advise 316L rather than 17/4PH for underwater applications where corrosion resistance may be critical.
