Jimmy Green Marine 8mm DIN766 MF DAMS Grade 70 is sourced exclusively and directly from MF Catenificio Frigerio, a modern chain manufacturing plant in Italy.
MF Catenificio manufacturing is all carried out in their research, test, and ISO9001-attested production facility.
The whole state-of-the-art enterprise is located in Olginate, near Lecco, Lake Como, Italy.
Every link is proof tested during production as part of their quality control.
The proof load testing process ensures that each weld has been completed successfully.
DAMS stands for Downsizing Anchoring and Mooring System
MF Calibrated Anchor Chain features enhanced Solid Zinc Galvanising treatment with greater micron depth and prolonged protection against corrosion.
MF has developed an enhanced Solid Zinc Galvanising treatment in conjunction with the standard hot dip galvanising process.
Solid Zinc Galvanising is an MF duplex treatment where both aspects of the process are complementary hot dip molten zinc galvanisation.
The improved coverage, micron depth and adhesion properties extended the effective working life of the galvanising by up to 25%.
Solid Zinc galvanising has a bright smooth appearance.
MF DAMS Grade 70 8mm DIN766 has a break load similar to 10mm Grade 40 chain.
An 8mm Grade 70 anchor rode can therefore be approximately 50% longer than the 10mm Grade 40 equivalent without any increase in weight.
MF DAMS 8mm DIN766 is a long-length, high-performance extended-cruising solution for yachts up to 12 metres in length overall.
N.B. As a comparison, a 10mm Grade 40 chain is generally suitable for yachts up to 16 metres in length overall.
It is advisable to consider all the relevant information when determining whether 8mm Grade 70 will be suitable for yachts between 12 metres and 16 metres.
Factor in:
- Displacement: Length ratio
- Your cruising intentions
- The anticipated anchorage conditions, e.g. depth, seabed holding characteristics, the length of fetch and degree of exposure to prevailing winds
- The length of the chain that will be deployed and any extra scope provided by an anchor warp
- The weight and design of the anchor
Your anchor rode is only as strong as the weakest link, so make sure that all your connectors and shackles are rated to the necessary break load.
The strength of 8mm Grade 70 means it is best considered an all-chain solution rather than a chain/rope combination.
14mm is the most compatible diameter rope to splice into an 8mm DIN766 chain.
16mm diameter rope can be spliced into an 8mm DIN766 chain but is a tight squeeze.
A minimum 18mm diameter nylon rope would be required for the chain and rope combination to be reasonably compatible in terms of strength.
Check your calibration:
There is one main calibration for 8mm chain - DIN766
N.B. Some Windlass and Chain manufacturers also refer to 8mm ISO 4565, but the dimensions are exactly the same as DIN766.
However, it is still very important to check the size and calibration of your gypsy/chain before you order.
If you are unsure, we can help you to decide - we will take all reasonable steps to ensure that you order the correct chain.
The simplest way to check that you are buying the correct calibration is to measure your existing chain, providing that it fits correctly.
We measure ten links because, in practice, it is difficult to measure one link accurately enough.
The links should be laid out flat and pulled tight.
Measure from the outside edge to the outside edge.
How to determine the correct calibration
N.B. The measurement for an old chain may be a little longer than new due to a degree of wear and elongation in use.
Chain Size | Inside Width | Outside Width | Pitch |
---|---|---|---|
8mm | 10.5mm | 26mm-27mm | 24mm |
Outside Width - depends on the degree of weld protrusion
Maximum Pin Dia. | Break Load | Weight per metre |
---|---|---|
10mm | 70Kn | c 1.4kg |
Every link is tested to the proof load during the manufacturing process, ensuring that each weld has been completed successfully
1Kn Force = 101.972Kg Break Load
70Kn = approximately 7138kg
Maximum Pin Diameter refers to the largest pin which will fit comfortably in the end link of an 8mm DIN766 chain.
Select the largest possible galvanised shackle (or anchor connector) by pin diameter to fit the chain.
A copy of the appropriate Test Certificate for your batch is available with your order on request - this is an extract from a recent certificate:
Jimmy Green Quality Control and Accountability
Every length of chain is checked and labelled with the manufacturer, the date received, and a corresponding batch number when it arrives.
The batch number is then recorded at the point of sale.
Every chain order is, therefore, traceable and accountable to the Manufacturer Test Certificate.
